Observation Lab, Unit #1

               In class on Monday, we finished testing the reactions of mixing 3 different chemical substances. The mixing of Calcium Chloride, Sodium Bicarbonate, and Phenol Red created reactions that we observed and recorded. These reactions included:

     

                                                - Mixture turning yellow

                                                - Mixture foaming/fizzing

                                                - Mixture heating

Before we mixed the substances, we observed each one and recorded our observations.

      Observations:

                               Calcium Chloride          Sodium Bicarbonate          Phenol Red

                                  -White                          -White                           -Red/Orange

                                  -Solid                           -Fine                             -Liquid

                                  -Beads                         -Powdery                      

   After we mixed the substances, we tested each paired with another (EX: CaCl and NaHCO3) until we were able to tell which substance was responsible for which reactions.

    My lab group decided, based on our data, that Phenol Red caused the color change, the Calcium Chloride caused and increase in heat, and the Sodium Bicarbonate caused the foaming. 

    Some questions my lab group came up with regarding the experiment follows:

           

                       - Are these chemical or physical reactions?

                       - How would the reaction differ if one component was missing?

                       - What caused the foaming?

   Some of these questions were answered, thanks to further experimentation.
