 Chemical vs. Physical

Today in class:
1) we went over the homework, Particulate Nature of Matter,
2) then we took a quiz,
3) got back our Observation labs,
4) mini in-class experiment (magnisum)
5) took notes on Physical&Chemical Properties&Changes,
6) and filled out a worksheet with our partner on Chemical vs. Physical Changes

Physical Properties
  • Everything has its own physical properties.
  • A physical property is something that does not change into something new.
    • For example:
      • Color, shape, texture
Physical Change
  • Changes in the physical properties of a substance.
  • Examples:
    • Snow turning into water
    • Melting a penny
Chemical Properties
  • How it reacts with other substances.
    • What's the ratio?
Chemical Change
  • A substance changes into a brand new substance.
    • Atoms are rearranged.
      • does NOT make more atoms!
    • Bonds are broken, and new ones are formed.
Chemical Change of Magnisum ---> Magnisum oxide

Mini in-class experiment on the effects of oxygen on metal.

Homework: Read 1.2 (if you have not already done so) & Web Assign Ch1.2 Rdg
